There are a lot of factors that figure into the realizable speed, so that is why these companies can get away with what is basically False Advertising. All manufactures claim amazing speeds for their drives, but rarely do actual systems come even close to the claimed speeds. A practice that I strongly urge every business to do (and if you keep the drives disconnected except when making backups, it will protect you from the viruses that encrypt all of your files).įrankly I have not been too happy with the Seagate 8TB drives. This is so that I can make 3 separate backups of all important data. And I have not seen major differences between the two brands for the smaller drives.Ībout 3 years ago I purchased 3 of the Seagate 8TB drives. Over many years, I have purchased a roughly equal number of disk drives from both Western Digital and Seagate. Lots of people with adamant opinions, but very few with facts. The disk drive debates tend to resemble religious wars. So I feel that I am highly qualified to speak on this topic. I have bought and used many disk drives over the years.

I'm a computer professional, I have done both hardware and software design. This is my opinion, based on my experiences, Your Actual Mileage May Vary. Anybody remember using those large thin floppies?😎 SEAGATE one of the top two Industry leaders for some time and pretty good history to show for it while advancing this aspect of our digital world.

Still DSLR Raw Photo images have grown exponentially from the early 1 - 3 megs some forty years ago to the now shooting from 36 - possibly to 60/mb and beyond files (advertised for Nikons Z-9 mirrorless leaked to be appearing soon). I Use three external for photo images ‘triple mirror’ back up - have important items on your internals? I try to treat them right and with usually great success. Have had Seagate before and this external added on to the other two I’m out growing - thank God for 6 -10 TB - dependable quick HD’s. We aren't carrying confidential files on this thing anyway so we don't need the encryption, I just don't want to lose several years of photo, videos, and music because a circuit burns out in the case.Īll in all we are happy with the large storage size for the price and the bonus extra USB hub! This particular drive is not encrypted, therefore if anything burns out with the case, we can pull the drive and get to our data via computer or another case. If you have an encrypted drive and the case burns out and the drive itself is fine.you still lose all the data since the two are keyed together and make the drive's data is inaccessible without the case. One key feature that drove us to this Seagate instead of Western Digital and others is the fact this drive is NOT encrypted, and that's what we want. It's not bad for back up purposes at all, and you could work off from it, but it wouldn't win any speed tests.

At first the drive leaps off the line in Windows 7 large file transfers at 60-ish mbps, which will reduce until it's hovering around 28ish mbps write speed on USB 2. This is a "shingled" hard drive so data has to be rewritten since there are over-lapping areas, which means a speed penalty. Seagate mentions you are not suppose to do that with this model and it needs to remain standing upright, boooo!Īs for the performance it is pretty decent for being a back up drive. About the only thing I wish was different is that you could lay this drive on it's side. The external power supply is a large all in one style rather than the previous drives we have bought in the past which are a dual corded brick. The logo at the top of the drive provides the power and status lights. The USB ports is a nice feature and can be used to copy from one drive to this one.

Its about 1/3 full and has not hic-upped yet. We have been using this back up hard drive for a few months now and it's going strong.
